| Windows NT Lingo |
| BDC |
Backup Domain Controller Along with the PDC, the domain can have one or more BDCs. Stores a copy of the security database and update it regularly. Serves as a backup for the PDC. (Primary Domain Controller) |
| CHAP |
Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol Two-way protocol using encrypted passwords. |
| CSNW |
Client Services for NetWare Access to a NetWare network. |
| DHCP |
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Allows clients to dynamically issue IP addresses from a pool of available addresses. Windows NT Workstation can act as a DHCP client. DHCP can also assign DNS and WINS server addresses and default gateway information. |
| DLC |
Data Link Control. A non-routable protocol used for communication with IBM mainframes using the SNA architecture. It also supported by some printers with network interfaces, such as Hewlett-Packard's JetDirect interface. |
| DNS |
Domain Name Service Translates host names into their corresponding IP addresses. Called name resolution. Windows Workstation can act as a DNS client. |
| ERD |
Emergency Repair Disk Backup of critical portions of the registry and other system files. You can create an updated repair disk using the RDISK /S command at the command prompt. Update this disk frequently. Using an older disk can cause more problems than it solves. |
| FAT |
File Allocation Table Dual-boot sytem, lower overhead and more efficient for small volumes. 400 MB or smaller. |
| FPNW |
File and Print Services for NetWare This software performs the reverse of GSNW. It runs on a Windows NT server and allows NetWare clients to access Windows NT shares and printers. |
| FTP |
File Transfer Protocol Allows files to be transferred to and from client computers from the server. |
| GOPHER | Internet distributed information service that predates WWW. Limited use, used particularly in universities. |
| GSNW |
Gateway Service for NetWare Microsoft's implementation of Novell's IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) and SPX (Sequenced Packet Exchange) protocols. |
| HAL.DLL |
Hardware Abstraction Layer Encapsulates many of the hardware-specific tasks performed by the operating system, other layers access hardware through this layer. |
| HCL |
Hardware Compatibility List The HCL is included on the Windows NT Workstation CD-ROM as HCL.TXT in the \SUPPORT directory. |
| HTTP |
Hypertext Transfer Protocol Protocol used for WWW (World Wide Web) servers. Windows NT Workstation includes Peer Web Services, a server for HTTP, FTP, and Gopher. |
| IPX/SPX |
Internet Packet Exchange / Sequenced Packet Exchange. Used to communicate with NetWare. |
| MBR | Master Boot Record |
| MS-CHAP | Microsoft's proprietary version of CHAP. Supported only by Windows and Windows NT. |
| NDS | NetWare Directory Services |
| NetBEUI |
NetBIOS Extended User Interface NetBUI is Microsoft's protocol built to support NetBIOS over networks. Low overhead, easy to configure, not routable. |
| NTFS |
New Technology File System Stores files more efficiently, support file-level security. More reliable. More advanced fault tolerant features, such as disk striping. More efficient with larger drives. 400 MB or larger recommended. |
| NTHQ |
NT Hardware Qualifier Tests a computer for compatability and detects supported devices. Create an NTHQ disk by executing the MAKEDISK.BAT file in the \SUPPORT\HQTOOL directory of the Windows NT CD-ROM. |
| NTOSKRNL.EXE |
Loading and starting the Windows NT Kernel. Located in the Boot Partition. |
| NWLink | Compatible transport, implementation of Novell NetWare Networks IPX and SPX protocols. Internet Packet Exchange / Sequenced Packet Exchange |
| PDC |
Primary Domain Controller Stores the main copy of the security database for the domain. Each domain has exactly one PDC. The user name and password are authenticated by a PDC when a client logs into the domain. The PDC can also store shared files and directories for use by clients. Install PDC first, BDC second when installing several machines for a network. |
| PAP |
Password Authentication Protocol Internet standard for PPP authentication. Passwords are sent as clear (ASCII) text and are vulnerable to snooping. |
|
POST |
Power-On Self Test |
| PPP - DIAL UP PROTOCOL |
Point-to-Point protocol. Supports authentication and error control. Physical and Data link layers. |
| RAS |
Remote Access Service A collection of services that allow dial-up access to and from Windows NT via modem. Outgoing Remote Access Service - Dial-up networking. For a RAS client, choose the Dial Out only option. |
| SLIP - DIAL UP PROTOCOL |
Single-line Internet Protocol Simple; Physical layer |
| SPAP |
Shiva, PAP Improved version of PAP. Passwords are sent in encrypted form. |
| TCP/IP |
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol A suite of protocols in widespread use on the Internet. Standard protocol of UNIX and the Internet. |
| UDF |
Uniqueness Database File Text file similar in format to the answer file. Defines two or more IDs for separate computers, and specifies unique settings for each use. An unattended installation file. Includes the information that the installation program would normally prompt for during the installation. See Windows NT CD-ROM example answer file called UNATTEND.TXT. |
| UNC |
Universal Naming Convention, A standard for referring to network resources on a local network. The format of a UNC path is: \\servername\share Servername refers to the server offering access to the resource, and share refers to the name of the shared resource. |
| WINS |
Windows Internet Naming Service Alternative protocol for host name resolution. Translates between IP addresses and NetBIOS names. NetBIOS names can be resolved without a WINS server through the use of broadcasts or a local LMHOSTS file. |
