Dear Dad:
A letter from a daughter to her father... February 4, 1985. Published in memory of Albert P. McCabe for Father's Day, June 19, 2005.

This letter was written and given to my father, Albert P. McCabe, 2 years before he passed away. He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, November 20, 1910. He passed away June 27, 1987. You may read more about him here:

Dear Dad,

I believe now is the time for us to really discuss our relationship. There are many things I wish to say to you…but you are not a listener. You do all of the talking whenever we are in the same room. I hope you don't tear this up at this point!

- I believe you are very intelligent. I have always known that you are a genius. (I may have spelled "genius" incorrectly...no it is spelled correctly!)

- You have always been a good father to me (us). I am very lucky to have a father like you. But…you have been an over powering person in my life. We seem to have been on different wave-lengths most of the time. I try to agree with you but I cannot agree when I don't agree! I realize that your background is so very different than mine. You have made my life so very different than your own. I realize that I am spoiled… I have never been hungry…I have never had to worry about a roof over my head…I have always had love and protection. You always made sure that I lived in the best locations. I always had good books, good music, and lots of love. THANK YOU!

- I have always been proud of you. I have always loved you. You taught me to love all people of the world. I learned from you never to be racially biased. I learned from you that the sun and the air are more important than money. Health and intelligence are more important than money. I learned that too much of any good thing is not good for you. You are very intelligent. THANK YOU!

- You taught me to drive a car. I learned excellent driving habits from you…not my "lead foot" of course! Thank you for teaching me to drive so well! THANK YOU!

- You have given me so much. I have been able to do so many things because of you. You allowed me to play the violin, conquer it and then go on to something else. I learned to play the piano and go on to something else. I have been able to try many avenues of self-expression and not have to stick with one for the rest of my life. That is wealth!. I love to learn new things…to constantly learn is my salvation. I am dead if I cannot learn. That is why I could not be "career" minded! I would be bored stiff. I am interested in everything - world wide - and must keep learning and discovering new things. THANK YOU!

- You have loaned me the funds to keep going. Without your assistance, I would not have been able to get this business off the ground. Thank you. THANK YOU!

- I have a dream…that we will be able to speak to each other with love and understanding and not be upset with each other because we do not agree. I believe that we are close to this dream. I am not so radical as you may believe. I am a humanist. I do not believe that war and killing and military force is the answer to any thing. I have learned that kindness to your enemy destroys the enemy. Force makes the enemy fiercer and deadlier. Hate and revenge destroy both sides in a confrontation. If I, for instance, become angry, I am not easy to speak to. I will say things that I mean at the moment…But not seriously. I have never "hated" any one or anything in my life. Nor have I ever wished to avenge any one. My heart would not stand up for that kind of feeling. I believe that if I do not wish to be around that which makes me upset I just stay away. Simple. I stay away from Orange County and other certain parts of the country for this reason. Let them have each other. So - you and I do get along. Just certain subjects are taboo…military force…government…chemicals…the C.I.A. etc., etc.

- THANK YOU! I am fortunate that you believe in protecting the people of America and feel responsible for us.

- I inherited your brains…and your work habits… and your will to learn…your ability to concentrate. I also inherited your disdain for money and wealth. I enjoy the good things in life…a good cup of coffee…a nice view of the sea, clouds, snow covered mountains, fresh air and the warm sun. I did not inherit your athletic abilities. I love to walk but not run. I can swim…but not for the sport of it. I am an armchair athlete. But I am healthy. THANK YOU!

- THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You will never know how grateful I am for being born and raised by you and Mom.

Love, Your Daughter,

Aimee

Father's Day, June 19, 2005.
Although you are gone, I will always remember and think lovingly of you. I am glad that we were able to speak to each other with love and understanding and not be so upset with each other because we do not agree before you passed away. I like to think that you would have torn up your Republican Membership card if you were alive today. Interesting thought anyway! It would be fun to discuss world events with you again.

Happy Father's Day to all of you who that still have time to speak and write to your Father. Do it now before it is too late.

Love,

Aimee L. McCabe-Walker
