Time for Drastic Personal Action NOW:
I have come to the conclusion that being a vegan/vegetarian is one of the most powerful ways to help save Earth, our Home. The meat industry: cows, pigs and chickens - is depleting our water supply, destroying our soil and most importantly it is causing global climate change. Here you will find links to sites which have vital information for you to view and hopefully will cause you to do more research on the issues.

A True Mother Cows Story
Richard and were remembering a "cow" event. We were working as managers of an RV - campground in northern California. The owners had set aside a piece of land to grow grass and also to let cows roam part of the year. One year after the cows had given birth to the little calves, the ranchers came and took them away. They were driving a small blue pickup truck, just like ours. The next day Richard and I were driving up the driveway - and the mother cows all lined up along the fence and mooed loudly at us. They continued doing this for a few days. So even mother cows get angry when their babies are taken away.

Why be a vegetarian?
You will be helping to save the cows, pigs and chickens, yourself and Planet Earth

101 Reasons Why I'm a Vegetarian
By Pamela Rice, Lantern Books

"Nothing will benefit health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." - Albert Einstein

I am always being asked "but what do you eat?" Like vegetarians have a hard time finding something to eat that hasn't been killed first. It is amazing to me that people don't realize there are more vegetarian items to eat than meat dishes. I always mention the traditional holiday meal. If you take away the turkey, ham, etc., you still have lots of food on the table. The word "vegetarian" means someone who eats no meat, fish or chicken.

"The question is not, can they reason?, Nor, can they talk?, But can they suffer?" - Jeremy Bentham

One pound of hamburger requires 2,500 gallons of water to produce, which could instead have been used to grow more than 50 pounds of fruits and vegetables.

Thirty-seven million animals are slaughtered a year for consumption.

One (1) cup of beans provides the nutritional equivalent of 2 oz or steak.

Amount of water needed to produce 1 pound of wheat: 25 gallons

Amount of water needed to produce 1 pound of beef: 2,500 gallons

In terms of caloric content, the grain consumed by American livestock could feed 800 million people. The U.S. livestock population - cattle, chickens, turkeys, lambs, pigs and the rest - consumes five times as much grain as the U.S. human population. There are 7 billion of them; they outnumber us 25 to 1.

Appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.
A vegetarian diet meets dietary needs and prevents chronic diseases better than an omnivore diet.

Vegetarianism is much more environment-friendly than diets revolving around meat.

Feeding rendered protein supplements - the boiled down, powdered remains of slaughterhouse and other animal waste - to domestic animals was banned in 1989 in the UK. Eight years later, in August 1997, the FDA issued weak regulations addressing this common practice. Consumer Union's Hanson explained the US ban: "All they said is that you've got to label it, 'Do not feed to cattle and other ruminants.' Farmers can walk in a feed store and still buy it."
Imagine cattle, chickens, turkeys, lambs, pigs and the rest - eating the remains of each other. A.W.

MAD COW DISEASE - bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)
Other forms: Transmissable spongiform encephalopthy (TSE)
Creutzfield-Jakob Disease (CJD)
www.mad-cow.org

Mad cow disease, medically known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, is a brain-wasting illness that infects cattle. It is believed to be spread when a cow eats meal that contains spinal or brain tissue of an animal infected with BSE. Humans can get a related illness, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, if they eat infected tissue.

Mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, is caused by a misshapen protein that eats holes in a cow's brain.

Bio-engineerd hormones, antiobiotics, and pesticides. Fifty-five percent of US antibiotics are fed to livestock.

USDA: ... long incubation period - four to five years - means mad cow typically doesn't show up in younger animals. Does this mean there is an incubation period for humans as well????

You will feel better and live longer!

What is Organic Milk?
To be certified organic, milk must come cows that, for at least a year prior to milking, have consumed no fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides and received no growth hormones or antibiotics. They must also have access to grass pasture. Just what are we giving our children to drink these days!!!

The Reality of Feed at Animal Factories
Just take a look at what's being fed to the animals you eat.....

Mad cow disease - Formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE is a progressive neurological disease that eats holes in the brains of cattle. The human form of mad cow disease, called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease has killed about 130 people, most of them in England.

We need to be ensured that animal brains, spinal cords and nervous system tissue, which when eaten (by cows) can transmit the illness, don't enter the animal and human food supplies. Please see Animal Parts in Food & Cosmetics
