Lights of Lake Superior
Early French Explorers of the 1600's dubbed this 31,000 square miles of inland water "Superior." Before that, the Chippewa tribe called it Gitche Gumee. But by any name, its waters and shoreline are among the most rugged and isolated in the United States. The discovery of copper, iron, and other valuable ores let to a period of heavy shipping traffic, which in turn created a demand for lighthouses as navigation aids.

“Lighthouses of South Africa” is proud to be the first site on these romantic buildings of yesteryear. The site covers buildings of historic value with some interesting technical data. The Lighthouse Company invites you to visit us as we grow our site and show you what South Africa has to offer.
Starting with seven lighthouses we will work our way around the coast and then travel up the East Coast to Durban and onto the Mozambique border.

Rua Reidh Lighthouse
Situated on a remote peninsula in the North-West Scottish Highlands, 12 miles from the village of Gairloch and 3 miles from the nearest dwelling, Rua Reidh Lighthouse is a unique and exciting place to 'get away from it all'. Built in 1910 by a cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson, it is now fully automated, allowing the keeper's house within the lighthouse compound to be converted to provide comfortable and homely accommodation.

Lighthouses of Argentina and the Falkland Islands. Argentina has a lengthy coastline, extending from the warm waters of the Río de la Plata to the edge of the icy Antarctic ocean. The northern part of the coast, in Buenos Aires province, is mostly low and sandy, with dangerous shoals offshore. This coast required construction of very tall lighthouses, including several that rank with the tallest in the world. Further south, the Patagonian coast is higher and the lighthouses are shorter.

The historical tower, was constructed in 1873. It is built of iron, black in color, with a height of 30 feet. The original optic was a red fourth-order lens.

The Cordova Rose Lodge

East Brother Light Station is a beautifully restored Victorian Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast inn perched atop an island in the straits that separate San Francisco and San Pablo Bays.
Pigeon Point Light Station
The Pigeon Point Lighthouse hostel is operated by the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International, a nonprofit membership organization, with cooperation from the California Department of Parks and Recreation and the United States Coast Guard.

Cape St. George Lighthouse
St. George Island, Florida. The first of three lighthouses was built on the west end of St. George Island, in 1833, by Winslow Lewis, builder of St. Marks lighthouse. The cost was $9,484. It was a 75 foot tower holding 11 lamps. Click Here to View More Lighthouses in Florida

Southwest Reef Lighthouse, Berwick, Louisiana
The lighthouse was established on September 1, 1859. It had a fourth order Fresnel lens, 49 feet above sea level. The lighthouse, colored dark red, is a square pyramid, fully enclosed in iron boiler plate. It was one of only two, built on this design.

Heceta Head Lighthouse
Interpretive Center - Bed & Breakfast - Gift Shop. Pronounced "Ha - SEE - Ta" by most, "HECK - ah - Ta" by others, but almost everyone agrees it is one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world. The Heceta Lighthouse and Light Keeper's house are circa 1894. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Locted in Yachats, Oregon.

The Sabine Bank Lighthouse is located on Sabine Bank, a shoal located offshore from where the Sabine River empties into the Gulf of Mexico. It was the first caisson construction ever attempted in open water by the United States.

Lime Kiln Point Lighthouse, San Juan Island
"This small concrete fog signal building began shining a flashing white light on June 30, 1919. An automated modern optic lens has replaced the original forth-order Fresnel lens. The two original keeper's houses still stand along with the remains of a lime kiln and quarry just north of the lighthouse. The lighthouse now houses a marine mammal research station."
New Dungeness Lighthouse, Sequim Washington
The New Dungeness Light Station is one of the oldest lighthouses in the Northwest with several of the buildings intact. It is located at the tip of the nearly 5 mile long Dungeness Spit in Sequim, Washington. The Lighthouse has been in continuous operation, providing navigational aids since it's completion in 1857.
