“The Health Effects of Secondhand Smoke”
Tuesday, June 27, 2006, 10:00 a.m., Washington, D.C.
The Surgeon General’s Report that we are releasing today, The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke, documents beyond any doubt that secondhand smoke harms people’s health. In the course of the past 20 years, the scientific community has reached consensus on this point. http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/news/speeches/06272006a.html

Here is text from The Cosmic Serpent
DNA and the Origins of Knowledge by Jeremy Narby:
Cigarettes emit 4000 toxic substances, according to (Switzerland's) Federal Office of Public Health (1994, p. 1). Klaassen and Wong (1993) write in their article on radiation in the the Encyclopaidia Britannica: "The largest non-occupational radiation sources are tobacco smoke for smokers and indoor radon gas for the nonsmoking population" (vol. 25, p. 925). Martell (1982) writes in a letter published in the New England Jounal of Medicine:
"Indoor radon decay products that pass from room air through burning
cigarettes into mainstream smoke are present in large, insoluble smoke
particles that are selectively deposited at bifurcations. Thus, the smoker receives alpha radiation at bronchial bifurcations from three souces: from indoor radon progeny inhaled between cigarettes, from 214Po [polonium214] in mainstream smoke particles, and from 210Po[polonium-210] that grows into 210Pb [lead-210]-enriched particles that persist at bifureations. I estimate that the cumulative alpha dose at the bifureations of smokers who die oflung cancer is about 80 rad (1600 rem)-a dose sufficient to induce malignant transformation by alpha interactions with basal cells"(p.310).
Evens (1993) writes in an article entitled "Cigarette smoke = radiation
hazard": "In 1 year a smoker of 1 to 2 packs per day will irradiate portions of his or her bronchial epithelium with about 8 to 9 rem. This dose can be contrasted with that from a standard chest x-ray film of about 0.03 rem.
Thus, the average smoker absorbs the equivalent of the dosages from 250 to 300 chest x-ray films per year" (p. 464). Strangely enough, the radioactivity of cigarette smoke is rarely mentioned in the majority of the articles dealing with the toxicity of this product. Abelin (1993), who provides a list of the different forms of cancer provoked by cigarettes, also notes that low-tar cigarettes have a lower risk factor than normal cigarettes.
However, "up until now, a lowering of the risk of heart attacks or chronic lung diseases among smokers of 'light' cigarettes has not been noticed" (pp. 15,16).
Co-op Board Bans Smoking in Apartments by New Owners.
April 30, 2002, New York Times
www.nytimes.com/2002/04/30/nyregion/30SMOK.html
A co-op board on the West Side of Manhattan has forbidden new buyers to smoke in their apartments, a restriction that real estate experts called the first of its kind in the nation.
Our "rights"
I would like to comment on our "rights" as human beings on planet earth. We all have rights to a good life. We all equally share in respecting others rights to do whatever they do. But this stops when others endanger our health and life in general.
Example: I am a strict vegetarian. I have no problem sitting near someone who is eating a big piece of dead flesh. The act is not harming me in any way. But sitting near a person who is smoking is a different matter. The smoke is cancer-causing and is endangering my life and others in the area. I had the option of simply asking for a table away from the smoker before laws were made to cause the smokers to refrain from smoking in restaurants and bars in California.

Cameron's Restaurant & Inn
A pub in Half Moon Bay, California, that bought a double-decker tour bus and changed it into a smoking bar. He can do this because the bus is separate from the pub. Good idea I think! Smokers and non smokers can knowingly go into the bus and submit themselves to smoke. Comments anyone?
HOW TO ENCOURAGE A SMOKER TO QUIT SMOKING
Anthrax or Smoke Inhalation
One way to get someone to quit smoking is to point out that Anthrax inhalation is one of our biggest fears these days. Seems to me that smoke inhalation via cigarette inhalation dispensers is a pretty big fear also. The anthrax way is just a much quicker way to die than the cigarette inhalation way. Both have the same result.
Another way to get someone to quit smoking is to tactfully let them know that they smell bad. Smokers are spending lots of money on an unhealthy habit.
Do football, baseball, basketball players smoke??? Does the President of the USA smoke???
You might also mention that we never see football players smoking. Or any other people who are in the sports field. How about our politicians that we pay our taxes to. Do you see them smoking?
I don't care if you smoke yourself to death
They smell when they walk by. Dirty habit. They toss their butts on the ground and out of their car windows. They stand around the front of office buildings forcing non-smokers to walk through the haze of smoke to get in and out of the building. They take more breaks on the job than non-smokers, therefore they are not as productive as non-smokers. Also, they appear to be loners. We see them standing outside smoking their cigarettes. Sometimes they smoke in groups. Smokers Suck.
Most seem to have bad work habits. Their work area usually is not as neat as their non-smoker co-workers.
Smokers do not seem to realize that when they walk by you, they smell like a ashtray full of dead cigarette butts. They do not have to be smoking a cigarette for us to smell them.
Lately, I have noticed that smokers are blocking the doorways of work places. We must walk through a cloud of smoke to enter or leave work. Also, there are giant ashtrays guarding the entrances to buildings. If the smokers are not there, the smell of dead butts are there to greet you. Smokers should not be allowed to be near the entrance of buildings. I protest.
The other day, I saw two nurses come out of the hospital for a smoke break. I would have taken a photo of them if I had had my camera with me. Nurses.
Why are insurance companies insuring smokers?
Another thing: If someone is harming their own body on purpose, why should they be insured?
Years ago I had a friend who smoked. Her car smelled, her apartment smelled and she smelled. Her clothes were full of the smell of cigarette tar. After being in the same room with her I too smelled like a smoky bar room. The smell was in my hair and on my clothes. Of course back then no one knew of the dangers of being near a smoker.
In regard to not being able to smoke in restaurants and bars, my father had to stop going to his favorite bar because he could not breathe around smokers. He would have liked the new law! P.S. I am not against smokers. I just don't like the smell of tobacco and believe it is not a healthy habit. Break the habit! Enjoy a better life! Save yourself from an agonizing death.

Idiots or Sheep

I understand it is very difficult to quit smoking. I have known too many smokers to not understand how tough it is to quit. What I can't understand is why these people start smoking in the first place. I am age 40 and when I was 9, 10, 11 years old we were given all of the facts about the dangers of smoking and the difficulty of quitting once you start. It was obvious to
me at even a very young age that you'd have to be an idiot to start smoking. I think I'm still right.
I understand the social pressures of the early teen years and how hard it is to go against the group. I believe this is the reason most people begin smoking. People who can resist social pressures are very rare (and very intelligent). I'm not talking about being non-conformist, where you do something BECAUSE it is the opposite of what most people are doing. That's another kind of sheep. I'm talking about not being a sheep at all and thinking for yourself.
People who are older than me may not have had all the facts about smoking at a young age are probably not idiots or sheep. They simply did not have the information. But almost anyone under the age of 40 is either an idiot, a sheep, or both if they chose to being smoking.

Note: When you take little rights from me you take them from yourself as well. Look around you. Your right to beleive in what you believe on is being taken away from you. In Boston, in some buildings, people can't even smoke in their homes, and those buildings are patroled and searched often for ash trays and butts without the owner present.
Some groups are willing to put a camera in everyones home. The legislaters are serously considering a law to do just that. Imagine your every move being watched. No I am not making this up. Just look at the new papers, flyers from powerful anti-smoking lobbying groups. See just what these people want, and are getting.
I understand your distaste for second hand smoke. I do all I can to keep my habit my own. If I seem to be upset its with good reason. You should be too.

Let me start off by saying that your posted opinions are no different than any other ex-smoker. As a smoker myself, I would much rather be in the company of people who have never smoked in the first place. The former
smoker is much more militant about smoking than the non-smoker.
But, let's look at this matter from a totally logical standpoint. You site health risks, and there are. There are far more health risks from pollution caused by automobiles and trucks. Would you have them banned
also? Or is it because you need your car, that it would be impossible to do that?
What about those people who refuse to bathe regularly? They run the risk of carrying multiple forms of bacteria on them that could easily be passed to others. Should we ban them from the public? Or should there be a
shower law? How much of the cost of each pack of cigarettes is tax? Most of it.
So, If you got rid of all the smokers, that tax paid every day by smokers, would have to be paid by you in other ways. Smokers chose to start smoking, but it is an addiction. That is proven fact. But to ban cigarettes and not autos would be absurd. Cars and trucks produce many more times the health risks than cigarettes do, yet the former smokers need their cars, so would NEVER think of giving them up. Could I sue you if I got cancer, and simply because you own an auto that produces exhaust, clean you out of millions? Sounds absurd, doesn't it? Now you know how silly this sounds to smokers.

Before I begin, please let me say I have a few smoker friends. They are otherwise pretty intelligent. I once smoked a pack of cigarettes a day. This was way before the dangers of smoking were out there for all to see. I ran around with smokers. One day I realized that I smelled, my car smelled and I didn't want to smell bad. I quit "cold turkey" that day. The only time I felt like smoking was when someone lit a cigarette. I felt the impulse to smoke but resisted. I now many years later would never consider smoking.
I do not mean to generalize and say that smokers are regarded as not very intelligent. I mean smokers do not seem to think about their health when they continue to smoke. Smoking is also a bit expensive. So between the cost of smoking and the cost to your health, smoking is not a very intelligent thing to be doing.
I smoked Salem cigarettes back in the 60s. I ran around with friends who smoked. None of us know of the health dangers then. And a pack of cigarettes cost 24 cents! I quit before it caused permanent damage to my health. I was lucky. But, hey, there are many dangerous hazards to our health. Like milk and meat and angry drivers.
Yes, I have as many or more flaws as cigarette smokers. We all have flaws. The point I am trying to make is smoking is bad for your health. We are all trying to have a nice healthy life. Life is short. Enjoy it.
